ABOUT GRANT MILLER

Grant Miller has been designing and shaping surfboards both in Australia and internationally for the last 33 years and has shaped in excess of 20,000 boards.

As fellow shapers, Grant had known Nev for many years and in July 2009 decided to visit Nev (& go surfing) at Ombak Indah Losmen, South Sumatra, which Nev was managing. Grant loved the place and the waves and has been back each year since.

As full-time 'hotel' manager, Nev had been finding it increasingly difficult to make time to get back to Bali to shape boards. He loved to 'spend time in the pit' but his primary commitment to the successful operation of the losmen meant that shaping had to take the back seat, much to Nev's disappointment, and that of his many loyal customers including me!

I met Grant at Ombak Indah in 2009 and recall sitting with him and Nev listening to them talk about shaping. After a few Bintangs, one thing led to another and I realised that I needed some new boards and Grant was in the best position to deliver.

How did Nev take the news? I'm happy to say, being the gentleman that he was, Nev fully understood the situation and was happy for Grant to take over. I got my first board later that year.

When Grant was at Ombak Indah this year in March Nev 'formally' handed over the job of supplying boards for Freeline customers needing new boards for their Indo surf trip. I've now got just about a full quiver of Grants boards and am enjoying my surfing more than ever.

You can find out more about Grant's boards and shaping philosophy at www.waterskatesurfboards.com. Grant is currently traveling in the States and Mexico and should be back in the shaping bay early next year.
